About Eric Power

Hey everyone!  So you wanna know who I am?  Well okay.

My name's Eric Power.  I am an animator/filmmaker.  I've been making short films and cartoons since the turn on the century (that is to say films I feel are good enough to show).  I started off as an animator after heading to college in Austin Texas, where I still live.  I got my start in animation when I was 17 working on the feature film Waking Life by Richard Linkletter.  Ever since then I had a passion for making the inanimate animate.  There is something deeply satisfying about watching something that was once static take on a persona.
After creating several short animations, some of which can be viewed on my youtube page I went on to feature length films. I am a self taught animator and filmmaker.  I haven't taken production classes or anything.  It's my philosophy that everything can be learned simply through hard work and passion.  I also believe one of the best ways to learn how to make a film is to just go out and do it.  Case in point:  My first feature film called Swordplay was my crash course in filmmaking.  There were a ton of hurdles to overcome in the making of this film.  Many restless nights were spent pulling my hair out trying to wrap my head around the editing software, camera settings, storage, and animation.  It was an amazingly crazy learning experience.  I am very happy with the way the film turned out in the end... although of course there are a lot of things I would do differently if I knew now what I didn't know then.
A year after Swordplay I started my second feature film, a documentary on the night culture called "Night People: seize the night".  I went for a bit of a film noir type style with this one, and stretched the boundaries of what is considered a documentary by incorporating even more animation, fictional elements, and a biased mood.  This film won the best experimental film award at the Traildance Film Festival on 2007!
After working on feature films for a while I got the bug to start doing music videos.  From then until now I worked solely on animated music videos in a wide variety of styles.  The bands have ranged from Celtic, Rock, Folk, Electronic, and so many more genres.  It's very rewarding work and helped me figure out how to tell little stories in the least amount of time.
Just recently I began pursuing my own film work again, in order to tell the stories I want to share.  Being a long time video gamer I figured a good way to get working on what makes me happy is to go back to my roots.  I will be making game videos in a variety of styles from my new home at ericpowerup.com.  I feel I have something fresh to offer with my skills as an animator and my unique take on things.
Basically, I'm going to keep on being who I am and see what happens.

Here's a video introduction!
