I've been animating the film since the year began. It's going incredibly well so far! I'm shooting some shadow stuff right now, and wanted to share a still. I need to do another video diary soon. I'm hoping I can pry myself away from the animation for a day sometime in the very near future. It's tough. It's kind of addicting seeing this film come together.

New Mantis

I've been busy cutting out a ton of stuff I need for the feature film the past two months, but today I finally got to shoot something! It's just a test shot, but animation is going to begin quite soon. This test shot of a mantis was a trial for a new animation rig I have set up. It's a table with multiple glass layers (2 at the moment, but it can grow), enabling for depth of field shots. You'll notice the background is a bit blurry, which adds a sense of depth to the shot. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out.

Fantastic Fest recap!

This was my first year attending Fantastic Fest, and although I wasn't able to stay through the entirety, I had an amazing time. The festival has a great informal vibe. You always have the feeling that you can talk to anyone there be they industry folks, mega talented directors, or high profile actors. I've been to film festival before where I felt more of a separation between the 'big wigs' and small guys. It's great to find a place where everyone is coming together to celebrate cinema and offer up their own contributions. I saw some amazing films at the festival and was fortunate to have my Path of Blood short film in the program. Seeing my short film on the big screen was a real treat. All the textures from the paper stood out, the sound was excellent, and it truly looked like a old samurai motion picture (albeit in paper of course). I was very happy with the response and felt the film hit all the right notes with the audience.

So now I am back in the studio and have begun production on the feature film! Things are ALREADY starting to take shape and it is only the second day of production. I will be making video diaries to chart my progress, so expect one of those to pop up in mid October. Until then, take a look at the very first image from the feature film!!!

My short film Path of Blood has been officially selected to screen at this years Fantastic Fest. This is one of my favorite film festivals, I've been so excited to go this year. Happily I will be attending as a filmmaker. I couldn't be prouder of my little short. I am extra excited due to my plans to make the feature version of Path o' blood. I'm gonna be talking it up while I'm there, hopefully gaining some interest/supporters/producers (fingers crossed). I'll be debuting the teaser poster for the film next month and will be making a limited amount of printed posters. Stay tuned and consider donating. There's a lot of cool stuff in it for ya! :D

Path of Blood Donations

In an effort to raise the funds for my feature length samurai film 'Path of Blood' I am setting up a donation system. I had previously featured a campaign to raise funds via kickstarter, and since I missed my lofty goal of 25,000 I decided to set it up as a direct to paypal donation here. I have some exciting news coming about about the future of the video, but rest assured the film will be getting made. I will use the funds to go straight into production on the film and get as much of it done as I can. This works well, since I can get started on the animation portion of production and slowly save up for voice actors, the score, sound design, and promotions. I will be honoring the same rewards I used on my kickstarter which are as follows:

$1 - My eternal gratitude, and knowing you helped contribute in a very real way to the creation of an independently produced feature animated film.

$5 - A special thanks in the credits of the film!

$25 - A DVD of the completed film and special thanks!

$50 - DVD of the film upon release, a 4 x 6 piece of art from the film (a character, weapon, etc), not a print, the real hand cut prop used in the animation process, and special thanks in the credits.

MAKING OF:
Ever since I saw Lotte Reineger's The Adventures of Prince Achmed, I knew I had to try my hand at shadow animation. Fortunately, Jeremy supported the idea right away. Shadow animation can be quite difficult, in the sense that you have very little idea what your scenes are going to look like until you put a light under them. I bought a large amount of various colored tissue papers and began experimenting.

I was super pleased with the results of the test and set to work on fleshing out the various environments and props I would be using in the video. I tried to force myself to limit my color palette to fit the song, rather than going completely color crazy. Working with the tissue paper proved to be a daunting task. It's a frustrating process trying to cut shapes from the tissue paper, since the scissors and xacto knife always tended to tear the paper in unwanted ways. I tackled this problem by gluing sheets of tissue paper to clear plastic vellum, which made the cut out process far less tedious.
My setup was incredibly minimal basically consisting of a little glass coffee table I have with some lamps shining underneath. On top of the table I placed my tissued backgrounds and put a piece of glass from a large frame over that to keep them in place. All the moveable elements went on top of this glass piece, which ended up working extremely well. In fact, I would say it was easier to animate this way than my usual paper on paper style.
In terms of the theme of the video itself, I chose to stick close to the narrative of the song, but wanted to add in a bit of a fairy tale flair to it. Originally I planned the have human characters in the story and go for a more realistic approach, but decided to use animals instead. For some reason I prefer animating creatures other than human. I saw the main characters as almost echoing the story of little red riding hood, but only in the most basic of senses. Shadow animation has traditionally been used in a ton of fairy tale animation, made famous by the pioneer of the technique, Lotte Reineger. I wish she was still around to critique my efforts.

So here is what my workspace is looking like right now. I'm working on a bunch of ideas and preparing stuff for a ton of new videos. At the moment I am juggling my ericpowerup work with my music video work. This is probably the busiest I've ever been. I don't want to rush my videos though, so I will be approaching my work in a relatively methodical way and taking my time to make sure I'm happy with the results. I am extremely excited about some of this new content though!
It's going to be a really busy fall I can tell you that! Videos are already planned and queued up for around 2 months solid. Now if I could just get that cloning machine to work...

Hey everyone!

So a quick update as to my June happenings.
I am working on a new animated music video for a really awesome song. I'm looking to have it complete by the end of the month. It involves skeletons! Test still below.

I am also planning two new series for ericpowerup. One of em you already heard of: Voyages In Space. The second is more in line with what my past ericpowerup have been and concerns gaming. I'm still working on the details, but rest assured I will be kicking things up a notch. The first episode will probably appear in early July if all goes well.
So all this stuff is in the works all at the same time, and while we wait for the new content to come up I am slowly releasing my past work over at That Guy With the Glasses. I am also doing updates to some of these videos and adding special content into them to keep things fresh. The new versions will premiere on the site throughout the coming weeks, so you should head over there and check those out.
One thing I am excited to post up is my Zelda on Paper episodes. I am going to put them all together into one video for your viewing convenience and include some new content in there as well which means it's back to the ole paper cutting in a bit! Should be fun.
Ohhhh also I have two music videos complete as of right now, neither of which has aired yet. I'm not sure exactly when they will be released since the band has the ultimate decision, but am excited to show them off!
And here is a test still from my upcoming video.... it's basically a style test but it looks neat so far I think! :D

VOYAGES IN SPACE

I am in pre production on a new mini series tentatively entitled "VOYAGES IN SPACE". The show will follow the adventures of Captain Powerup on a mission into uncharted space. Embark on a voyage filled with excitement, games, films, and most likely DANGER! Will he persevere, descend into madness, or be obliterated by an alien vessel? Find out soon!
This video series will take a bit of time to complete, since it will involve some serious planning, effects work, and intensive animation. Other videos will be coming out in the meantime, since they are less involving from a technical standpoint so stay tuned.
A trailer for the series is now up after the credits of Mario Meltdown.

Also, after a good amount of time away from my ericpowerup activities, due to a heavy work schedule, I am preparing a lot of new concepts for some interesting future shows.

It's going to be a good year! Exciting news is also just around the corner...

Playing with art supplies

Recently I've been experimenting with some new art supplies, thanks to art store gift cards I received this year. I found this really neat new line of sculpture materials from Crayola called Model Magic. It's weird stuff to work with. It is an air drying substance that is easy to mold and has the weight and feel of working with a large marshmallow, very strange indeed. I only tried it out once, but I am interested in seeing what can be done with this stuff. Right now, I kind of feel it is more for simple work, since it is difficult to do details in... but perhaps it just takes a bit of time to get used to the substance.

Game Concept: The Inventor

I took it on myself to put together a concept for a sidescrolling game of my own design, seeing as how there are too few of them these days. I created some storyboard type animations to give you a visual sense of what I am going for. Take a look:

Here for your viewing enjoyment is a nice little video I made last year for The Boxing Lesson, a local band that makes incredible music. This is a good introduction video to get an understanding of my love for monsters and old school creature flicks. A group of astronauts embark to a strange and dangerous world.
